The first known baseball game took place back in 1846 in New Jersey. The game was organized by Alexander Cartwright.  Abner Doubleday is often given credit for inventing baseball, but a lot of people believe it was really Cartwright.

The Union soldiers played baseball wherever they went during the Civil War and that helped the game spread across the country.

In 1869, the Cincinnati Red Stockings became the first professional team. They recruited the best players from around the nation. They went 65-0 that year! After that, other teams decided they better compete for the best players too.
